An early Hess small auto, flywheel friction mechanism, unmarked.
Hessmobil Touring, circa 1904
L 8.75” (22 cm), W 3.5” (8.9 cm), H 4.75” (12 cm)
An early Hessmobil touring car with replacement driver and passengers. As with all Hess products, many variations exist. Spoke wheels, solid wheels, different style crank handles, one and two drive shafts on front wheels, etc. “Hessmobil” embossed into the metal engine cover with the early “H in a shield” logo on sides and the “JLH” logo on the back of the vehicle. Patent information printed on the inside of driver’s seat.
Hess Touring, Early Model, circa 1900 (not in my collection)
Earlier than the previous Hessmobil touring model shown, this example incorporates many differences: no printed name or patent information; No “Hessmobil” embossed in the engine cover; spoked wheels; two-toned printing in red and cream; an extra step on the back entrance. Patent numbers appear to be embossed into the side and back steps with the remaining side step embossed “D.R.G.M.”. Apparently the name “Hessmobil” had not yet come into existence as this model was being produced.
This small Hess auto has flywheel friction mechanism, and is marked with a large “JLH” on radiator. Later production, probably mid to late 1920’s.
