Women race car drivers of the 1920s – 1930s There were many notable women race car drivers of this period. Perhaps Hess included a woman driver on this Hess 1050 model racer as a tribute or an acknowledgement of their accomplishments on the race circuit. Included in this group of outstanding women are Czech Elishka Junkova, France’s Helle Nice, Britain’s Paddy Naismith, and Canadian Kay Petre. Many other unnamed women followed in their footsteps during this time period. |

Hessmobil 1050 roadster, circa early 1930s, 2 examples L 7” (17.8 cm), W 2.5” (6.4 cm), H 3.5” (8.9 cm) Hessmobil roadster, two examples, one with no model number or driver, one with number and woman driver, marked with “JLH” logo, “D.R.P.”, “D.R.G.M.” and “Hessmobil”. Cranked flywheel power with front wheel drive. The 1050 model is extremely hard to find, even more so than the remaining 1050 series of Hessmobils. Production must have been very limited for this model in the 1050 series. I have only observed a couple of these; one with a full step from wheel to wheel and marked “1050” below the “JLH” logo and this unmarked one with a shortened step. Variation in product lasted until the very end of the company. This model is somewhat of a departure as it is driven by a woman, the only Hess vehicle to feature a woman driver instead of a man. |
