Hess 300 series locomotive with clockwork, circa 1900 (not in my collection)
The photo shows the only model 300 series locomotive equipped with a windup mechanism. Made by Hess, but advertised and sold by Bing and possibly other distributors. It is pictured in the Bing catalog from 1901 and utilizes large, outside the frame, cast metal wheels. Most of the 300 series locomotives were simply push powered with one exception which was flywheel powered.
Hess 300 series for Carette passenger wagons, circa 1900 (not in my collection)
w/o couplers: L 4.125” (10.5 cm), W 1.75” (4.5 cm), H 3” (7.6 cm)
Hess made several trains for Carette. These included the Hess 100 (Carette 905), Hess 575 (Carette 906), Hess 300 (Carette 908) and Hess 1035 (Carette 907). Shown are three passenger wagons in the Hess 300 series made for Carette. They are decorated in typical Carette fashion and each is marked “G.C. & Co. N.”. This 300 series of trains from Hess was short lived and never made their appearance again after the early 1900s.
Hess 300 series locomotives
The Hess 300 locomotive was created in the late 1890s or very early 1900s and though originally sold by Hess through wholesale distributors, it was also sold to other manufacturers such as Carette and Bing. Most of these were push powered, but a clockwork version was made for Bing which had large, outside the frame wheels. An earlier flywheel powered version was also available. There is another 300 series on this website made for the Danish market with different graphics and marked “D.S.B.” (Danish State Railways). Top locomotive shown in blue was probably made for Bing, middle locomotive in green and numbered “908” was made for Carette. Bottom red version is the standard Hess model.
Four Hess locos, from the smallest 100 series on the far right, 575 series, 300 series and 1023. Although the 1023 loco appears larger than the 300, it is close to the same size overall once the cowcatcher is excluded. The 300 series carriages also fit well with the 1023 loco.
