There are many variations as with most all Hess manufactured items. During a small period of time when the company ownership was being transferred from Matthias Hess to his son, Johann Leonard Hess, two company logos were printed on their toys, along with the phrase “Marke Hess”. |

Hess large steamer, circa 1900 L 9.375” (24 cm), W 1.75” (4.5 cm), H 2.375” (6 cm) Marked with “JLH” logo, “H” shield logo, “Marke Hess” and “Made in Germany”. An earlier Hess steamer utilizing a simple flywheel which depended on contact with the axle for momentum. It proved to be a poor method and shortly thereafter had a hand spinner added to the flywheel shaft. Other earlier boats used this method until Hess recognized the poor performance and added a hand spinner to the flywheel. This model has two smokestacks and two ventilators but Hess probably produced several variations. This example is named for a particular geographic market, as others were. |

Hess 7 boat, circa 1920s L 11.75” (30 cm), W 2.375” (6 cm), H 3.25” (8.3 cm) This boat was the largest size offered by Hess and uses the same basic platform as Hess’s larger modern battleship. It was equipped with a chauffeur style driver and friction flywheel mechanism. |

Hess 7 boat Hydromobil, circa 1920s L 11.75” (30 cm), W 2.375” (6 cm), H 3.25” (8.3 cm) This racing boat was equipped with a racing style driver and friction flywheel mechanism. Named “Hydromobil” it is almost identical to the standard number 7 boat.
